I love the Bossa Nova. Had it on all afternoon. Stan Getz' saxophone reminds me of the smoke lazily rising from a cigar, wafting through the warm and dimmly lit room.
Corcovado, Menina Flor, Girl from Ipanema, One Note Samba.
Lately my favorite is Samba Triste. The combination of rhythm, melody, and mood here is absolutely brilliant. Incredibly romantic.
I've just checked out your blog, Yardbird, and am dismayed that it has no followers and no comments. I'm hereby changing both of those situations!
ReplyDeleteI love jazz, especially from the same periods you so enjoy. Sometimes I feel such a connection to the 20's, 30's and 40's in particular that I think I must have lived back then. And like you, I like the modern Latin tempos as well.
I'm nowhere near your level in my knowledge of the particular band members, but I love Armstrong, Ellington, Goodman, Shaw, and many of the Swing Era bands as well. From a standpoint of singers, I think Billie Holliday was the all around greatest, but Ella, Sara, Lena, Bessie and many more are voices I can't get enough of.
So, keep on writing and I'll keep on reading as you keep the era of jazz and big bands alive.
P.S. I know it's not jazz, but have you ever heard the Jo Stafford version of "I'll Be Seeing You"? Her plaintive voice singing that song is the saddest, most heartbreaking thing I've ever heard. Makes me tear up every time.
Hello there Yardbird,
ReplyDeleteSomeone commented on an old blog post of mine, and there you were. I wonder what happened to you. I do that you know, with regular readers and commenters, wonder why they left me...
I hope you are well. Happy new year.
